James Cameron’s film, AVATAR, is set under an imperialistic narrative of invasion for commercial gain, complete with the side story of â€Å"ethnographic exploration† in the name of science, on the planet of Pandora. The year is 2154, but the story is an old and familiar one - the Western colonization of non-Western peoples and the exploitation of their natural resources, such as land, oil, gold, or labor. While it is impossible to deny the impact and visual experience of the film and its commercial achievements (unprecedented global box office success), the story and narrative portray a very conservative way to understand history and the role the West has played in it. The premise of AVATAR is simple, using the traditional formula of boy meets girl, James Cameron introduces us to the year 2154 and presents a clash of civilizations. Resources Development Administration (RDA) with the assistance of a contracted private mercenary army, led by Colonel Quaritch, are looking for the precious mineral called unobtanium. Unobtanium is a much-needed energy source for planet earth. Colonel Quaritch and his army of mercenaries embark on a mission to clear the area of the NaVi and mine the desired unobtanium found underneath Hometree (a space belonging to the NaVi). A disabled Marine, Jake Sully, will take the form of an avatar in order to infiltrate the Na’Vi and gather intelligence that will help Colonel Quaritch find a way to force the Na’Vi to leave Hometree.
